Publicity & Events

After an internship at British ELLE magazine in London, I started working at music publicity houses - Savage & Best, LD Publicity and as Head of PR for Richard Branson's V2 Music Group. I then worked in marketing and as a publicist for Penguin Books and EMI Music, as well as for major consumer publicity houses such as Goode PR, Pead PR and The PR Shop. Since 2005, I operated my own freelance public relations business working on Australian and New Zealand clients. I have worked on a varied range of clients and industries over the past 25+ years working in publicity. I also have extensive experience organising events for my clients. Some of the projects have included:

Food: Some of the foodie clients I have account directed campaigns for include Kapiti Fine Foods, Mainland cheese, Anchor milk, Bakers Delight, Nice & Natural and Fonterra, as well as working on projects for Griffins biscuits, Speight's, Isaac's Cider, Mac's beer, Moa beer, Champions of Cheese awards, Equires Coffee and many others.

Tourism and Property: As senior communications manager for Vail Resorts, I manage the internal and external communications for Perisher, Falls Creek and Hotham ski resorts. I have also account directed Peppers Resorts, Retreats & Hotels, Breakfree, Mantra, The York boutique hotel and The Pearle of Cable Beach, as well as working on projects for Tourism Malaysia, Tourism Australia, Tourism Western Australia, Hilton Hotels, Hard Rock Cafe, Holiday Inn and Club Med. I was a vice president of TravCom (NZ's travel writers' and photographers' association) and was a member of the ASTW (Australian Travel Writer's Association). I have also written travel articles for various newspapers and magazines and was Communications Manager for Destination Docklands, a tourism not-for-profit organisation in Victoria. My family has also been involved in resort and hotel property development and management, so I have a keen sense of how the tourism and property development industries works from all sides. Property PR work has included as PR Manager for Intrapac Property (developments include Noonamah Ridge in NT, Quay 2 in Torquay and Somerfield in Melbourne), as well as PR work for home builder Porter Davis, The Property Council of NZ and property developer YourLand Developments. I also delivered two community events per month at different property developments across Victoria.

Arts: Passionate about the arts, I have put together event itineraries and accompanied authors on tours around New Zealand, such as Marian Keyes, Charlotte Dawson, Sarah Quiggley and Morris Gleitzman during my time as a Penguin Books publicist. Most recently, I worked on the inaugural Docklands Christmas festival as communications manager, event photographer and social media person. I have also worked on business awards, music festivals and tours, the Brit Awards, the Q Awards, as well as fashion and beauty award events (such as the Schwartzkopf hairdressing awards). I have also worked on publicising directors and musicians, facilitating promotional schedules while on tour with bands within Britain, America, Australia and New Zealand during my music business days.

Government / not-for-profit: I was the mayoral speechwriter for Sir Barry Curtis, an Auckland regional mayor, for a year before his retirement, as well as working as a communications account director for government agencies, including Transit New Zealand on the launch of the Busway project, many roading infrastructure projects and the Auckland Harbour Bridge works projects. I have also worked as communications and media manager for Life Saving Victoria, which included projects such as summer media campaigns during the worst two seasons for drownings ever recorded, the 20th anniversary of the Play it Safe by the Water campaign, as well as work on speech notes, event management, ministerial and EMV liaison, media releases and strategies for the various departments - including sport, education, operations and on national Royal and Surf Life Saving campaigns. I also managed the media during high profile drownings of two surf lifesavers in Portland on Easter Sunday 2019. I have also worked for the Surf Coast Shire Council as a digital communications officer and on media work, as well as for Colac Otway Shire Council as Coordinator of Communications. I have also written for the Wilderness Society of Australia and Geelong Regional Libraries Corporation on communications projects.

Beauty and Wellness: For two years, I put together a weekly product column for the Herald on Sunday Living section and have worked on clients in the beauty industry such as Gaia natural skincare, Skin Food, Schwartzkopf and others.

Business: I regularly contribute business articles to the Career section of the New Zealand Herald, and have account directed projects for IT companies, executive coaches, financial institutions and government agencies.

Other industries have included: transport, jewellery, fashion, children's products, tapware, product design, pets, swimming pools, and everything in between! Get in touch if you'd like to find out specific case studies.
